Boogie Woogie under the Snow: The Boogens (1981)

The Boogens (1981)
Rating: **1/2
Starring: Rebecca Balding, Fred McCarren and Anne-Marie Martin

A monster movie built around a slasher skeleton, complete with clichés such as a villain's POV, ignored doomsayers and even some pretty decent killings, this mine-based obscure horror is a cult treat for many, being unreleased in video for nearly two decades since its theatrical run.

The Boogens (1981) tells the story of a snowbound silver mine being reopened years after it was shut down due to a string of bad luck involving miners getting killed in various accidents. However, unknown to them, this stirs awake something in those caves that is awfully hungry and its starting to take a habit of crawling out to the surface to feed.

Cue some teenagers out for a snowbound getaway with their boyfriends, the latter happen to be working on the mines, too. It's only a matter of time before the monsters get to them and then the feeding begins...

For most parts, The Boogens (1981) is poorly acted and scripted, and with the movie's direction have us waiting too long before the action gets going, filled with many false scares that only half work. By the time the monsters have their appearance, the hype has gone stale and it just comes out pretty mediocre.

Arguably, I could easily diss away this film for being that bad but the truth is, it kinda added some charm to the film's quality. While it's sluggish and pretty dull at some places, The Boogens (1981)'s greatest strength is its atmosphere, which is actually great due to the whole movie taking place in the snowy mountains, impressive looking caves and underwater mines, adding much isolated and helplessness as victims fall prey to something underneath them. Cheese fans might appreciate this a bit more, with the entire film dipping into mediocrity as a stalk-and-kill influenced monster flick, whose little critters' design looked like a cross between an octopus, a turtle and a spider. The low budget definitely limited their appearances (and too the effects used to animate them) but made their attacks worth a while to watch.

Bottom line, it's half and half of a good and a bad movie. It does reek of 80s nostalgia and cheddar, two principal elements that saves a bad film any day but at the same time, it could had done more with its scares, kills and, more importantly, its monsters. Silly 80s B-movie at its decent state.

Murdering Little Nightmares: The Children (2008)

The Children (United Kingdom, 2008)
Rating: ****
Starring: Eva Birthistle, Stephen Campbell Moore and Jeremy Sheffield

Before the hack-fest...
A holiday weekend brings two families together for some quality time in a picturesque snowbound countryside cottage, although, one of the tykes appears to have caught what resembles a flu later that night, something that soon escalates to somethings worse when he starts to act strangely. And violently.

When the child's violent behavior starts to "spread" along the rest of the younger members, it all reaches pandemonium when an "accident" led to one adult severely injured. It soon became clear that the children have gone homicidal from an unknown cause and the adults must now decide their own survival, whether to kill or be killed.

tender moment? Or brooding evil?
Killer kiddies are not entirely new to the horror and thriller genre, not with all those "Children of the Corn" films Dimension keep crapping out, as well as smaller titles like Bloody Birthday (1981) and Mikey (1992). But none of them got the raw power and chilling atmosphere provided by The Children (2008) as it starts brooding the mood the moment the families get settled in and it was only a matter of time (and a test of patience of the viewers) before the gooey red stuff starts.

I have to admit that this movie caught me off-guard to how shocking it is than what I had in mind; while most killer kid titles barely have the dangerous tykes draw blood from their own, The Children (2008) sports violence not only towards the adults but also against the children. Note these aren't short 13 year olds or teenagers, but kids around ages 10 or lower killing off their mumsies and dadas as if it was playtime, or being killed off in a rather brutal fashion. It's disturbing, alright, and I like it!

That's it, baby, strike that pose!
The film avoids the usual horror tropes that put these characters into doing dumb and unrealistic things or just degrading them into simpletons who would likely walk into a burning house just to fetch some leftover toast. If there are any such tropes in the story, it's likely from the psychological trauma these anxious adults are put into since, no matter how desensitized they are forced to be in hopes of surviving their children's assaults, the very matter that these are their kids makes it hard to pull them away even if they start killing people.

Un chien andalou much?
The only big mystery here is the nature of the children's "infection". It's hinted someplace in the film that a virus spreading may have caused all of this, and one scene even has us looking at a growing bacteria hinting a possible answer. The ending did gave us a few stones turned, but it also left us with another ambiguous and a more chilling question. Something about it spreading to someone...older?

Ironically taking place in Christmas, the holiday where little brats usually have their way, this wildly entertaining chiller and perversion of a happy holiday gatherings is everything of a horror must-see! It's clever, well-acted and beautifully shot, this fresh take on a familiar story may just put the fear of unpredictable child's play on you!

Bodycount:
1 male accidentally sleighs head first unto garden harrow, later found gutted with a doll
1 boy pulled into glass shard, impaled
1 cat seen dead in girl's lap
1 female gets a color pencil to the eye
1 boy forced face first into sharpened plank
1 male found dead under the snow
1 girl hit by a car

Punishment is Good: Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
Rating: ****
Starring: Lilyan Chauvin, Gilmer McCormick and Toni Nero

Funny thing this movie got its notorious cult status being a "Santa Slasher" when we have Christmas Evil (1980) out there with Saint Nick stabbing people in the eye with toy soldiers a couple of years earlier. Then again, I wouldn't blame the angry moms as Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) is pretty darn mean-spirited compared to Evil, ditching all sense of warmth and tenderness of the Winter holiday for sleazy exploitations, nightmarish trauma and, of course, some bloody good slayings.

In 1971, Young Billy Chapman was visiting ole' grampa one Christmas Eve with his mum, dad and baby brother Ricky when, much to his tiny terror, grampa turns out to be a scrooge of an old coot and scares the shit out of little Billy, saying Santa severely punishes bad kids. The moment the family decided to go home, luck ran out on them as they come across a homicidal Santa, who successfully shot Billy's dad on the head while driving away from the Sick Nick and murder-rapes Ma right in front of Billy, who scampers away to hide.

Fast forward three years later, Billy and Ricky are moved to an orphanage headed by one Mother Superior, whose idea of punishment involves belting anyone regardless of age and gender, hoping the physical assault with scare them straight. Hence, traumatizing Billy even further and teaching me never to trust a nun aged 40 and above.

So, fast forward again ten years later, Billy grew up to be a nice and sturdy lad, who actually isn't too bad looking and very helpful. His one vital flaw? He's still afraid of Santa. With Christmas being around the corner once more and the toy store he's working have him standing in as an in-store Holly Jolly Fat Man in the last minute, Billy finally snaps. Cue unraveled psychosis and a murder spree.

Made notorious with its heartless depiction of Saint Nick with an axe, Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) still has a good run as an effectively simple run-in-the-mill slasher movie who does away the holidays with its own set of black-hearted charms. Billy's decades of childhood traumas are an interesting watch just for its sheer nightmarish ridiculousness, kept with a good pace and some shocking moments. The fact that the film opted to spend a a good chunk of the time exploring our slasher's state of mind gives it with a bit more weight for a bodycounter flick, a slight far cry from the usual mute stalkers and vengeful revenants. Though by the time Billy matured enough to stand 6 feet tall and bulk some meat, it got a little sleazy and a little cheesy, with the fella uttering out his coda being Santa and punishing anyone he catches doing something "Naughty". (Like two lovers in a tryst and a local bully) It's shlocky, yes, but it's the entertaining kind of shlock.

Still, it isn't without its nitpicks and shortcomings; after a grandeur Christmas Eve night of hacking people left and right, Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) loses a bit of steam as it crawls towards its climax. There's an attempts to build further suspense with the cops crawling all over town, hunting down Billy and figuring out where he could be heading to, but the resulting last act is rather underwhelming, amounting to just our Santa slayer looming his way into the very orphanage he grew up in, while Mother Superior hams up more self-righteous spew. It all concludes way too easy and abruptly, though it earns a wee point for making the killer sympathetic in the very last minute.

In a standard B-movie slasher kind of way, Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) is a good run around familiar horror genre tropes, bringing us a taste of the dark side of the holidays all the while. It's sick and twisted. Fascinating and frightening, Holly jolly and gory! All you could ask for from a cult favorite!

My Christmas Wish List 2011: Realistic and Unrealistic

MY HOLIDAY WISH LIST: IN REALISTIC AND UNREALISTIC TONES

Oh Santa, why won't you give me what I want for Christmas?

Santa: Cuz you've been a Naaaaughty boy!

O Santa, you only say that cuz you never gave Mrs. Clause a chance to have kids.

Santa:...Kid, this is why you don't get presents from me...

Haha, just kidding. But seriously, I never did get what I want for Christmas, as in the specific thing. I once asked for a Tin robot, they gave me a big shiny one. A year later, it broke. But I do appreciate it all, i guess in a warm and fuzzy way, I love my presents until the time I reached 13, then I finally stopped believing in Santa and the only Santa I know is either the department store one or the one that break into houses and steal yer cash.

But for this festive season, I'll try to add some magic to this blog and list down twelve things I would really like to get for Christmas no matter how impossible they are, both the realistic" you can get in this world if you truly worked hard for it kind " of things and the unrealistic "only in another world/reality if you believe in the String Theory like me" kind of things.

The Unrealistic List:
12. A late-night killing spree with the Neon Maniacs
Cuz nothing says massacre night like a bunch of grown men in costumes!
11. A day jamming with Alex and his droogs.

A nochy with like Alex and his droog filled with like voilence and moloko? How could I skazat no to that?
10. A date with Angela Baker (The one in Part 2.)

Tell me that's not date-material. I dare you!
9.  A seat for Swan Lake featuring Nina Sayers

The only ballet I'll ever watch
8. A three-day trip to Matool

A three day all-you-can-kill zombie fest!

7. The Necronomicon Ex Mortis

Cuz nothing says Christmas than an epidemic of the evil dead

6. A journey down to Midian or a Night on a murder spree with "Dr. Decker"

hmm...learn wisdom from a city of monsters? or home invasion with Decker...tough...
5. A rock concert with Sammi Curr

Lightning Rock at it's best! Literal lightning rock
4. A dinner with Patrick Bateman and company
And, if he'll let me, we could jam at his flat with Huey Lewis playing
and talk about serial killers all night.

3. Vigilante justice seeking with Dexter Morgan

Cuz we'll make you a believer...
2. Mary Shaw's dummy, Billy
I dunno about you, but I'm hungry for some Chinese!
1. A Steak night with Hannibal Lecter

unless he prefer a night warm liver and some glass of Chianti

And now
The Realistic List:

12. A signed Poster from the band Lordi

It would have been KIZZ, but let's try something simplier...

11. A pair of tickets for the next My Chemical Romance concert

3. A seat for the next SCREAM Awards

2. A prop from any Friday the 13th film
especially Junior's head!

1. A prismacolor box set.

My Super Psycho Christmas Night: Guide on Surviving a Movie Holiday Gone Wrong

STICKYRED PRESENTS:
MY SUPER PSYCHO CHRISTMAS NIGHT!
(Note: try not to get any of this so seriously. It's all for fun. So Loosen up! It Helps yer BUH-RAIN (brain)~!)
So, it's that time of the year again when everything's cheerful, you get yer 13th month pay and all yer friends and families get together to celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ's birthday... Jewish folks excepted. But what's this?! A loon is out in the night killing people?! Oh my, does this mean Christmas is over for everybody?!

Our kind of Santa!
Well, not really. So a killer is out there dismembering a happy family in more ways than one, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy that one time of the year when you get to go home early and relax with a nice hot cocoa and a sweater. So what can you do to ensure your (as well as everybody else's that matters) survival? Well my friend, here are some easy steps to survive the night, ensuring the Holiday cheers wouldn't turn into Holiday fears even if the maniac have his axe on you.

First of...

Step 1. Relax. Make some hot cocoa, put up a fire on your chimney or whatever you got to heat the place up and sit on a chair.

Step 2: Know the location of where the break-out happened. Let's face it, you can't be sure that this guy will even come to your neighborhood if he's ten or fifteen states away from your cozy little cabin or house. If that is the case then just relax and keep a shotgun near you, but if it turns out the killer's around the premises or is a town or street away from you, we better jump to one of these:

If you're alone:

Step 1: So the killer does turn out to be active around your neighborhood, the worst thing you could do is call the police right away cuz, in case the killer is skulking around your house, they will find out this way that you are aware of their presence. There's also a matter of annoying the cops into thinking you're one of those folks who go paranoid-delusional about killers under their beds, especially if there aren'y any sightings of the maniac around your premises. Yet.

Best way to approach this is to prepare weapons that you could use to defend yourself. Real weapons! I'm not talking about pen knives or kid's scissors. I'm talking about BUTCHER KNIVES, HATCHETS AND, most effective of all realistic weapons that can be found in a household, SHOTGUNS!

(Note: weapons would only work on human killers. If they turn out to be supernatural then you're in deep shit...)

One of the biggest mistakes of people defending themselves do is that they always let the killer gain access to their weapons. In case you do have your weapon ready, why not try locking up your drawers? Or keep all the shotgun shells nearby where you could find it? Hide all your weapons near you and make sure you don't lose sight of it. The moment you do, the sooner they can use it against you.

Step 2: Never, EVER, board up your doors and windows. Come on, face facts, sooner or later they will get in and you've got to defend yourself. The very last thing you will need once he got in is that you locked yourself inside your own house and the killer got you cornered because the only exit you got just so happens to be behind that loon in a Santa suit, wielding an axe. Lock your windows and doors but not too much or else it'll be hard for you to unlock it once the killer gets the upper hand.

This is why you must choose your decors wisely.
Step 3: If by any chance the killer did get into the house, never shout out stupid lines like asking if there's anybody looming in that dark unlit attic. The moment you do that, the killer knows you're aware of him and he's gonna panic. If he panics, he'll kill you. And if he kills you, you're dead. If you're dead, then all yer loved ones will gloom. If your loved ones gloom, they'll hunt down the killer. If they hunt down the killer, they'll probably end up in bigger trouble than you did.

If a situation like this do happen, go outside, run to a hated neighbor and ask for his/her/their help. It may take some time (and patience) before this feller helps you but once he/she/they did, use his/her phone to call the cops and then stay for a while. Chances are the killer probably find out about you escaping and he'll hunt you down. Plus, he'll would likely kill your hated neighbor along the way. Take that as a bonus for the both of you!

Step 4. If the killer attacks, don't panic. Go LOW if it's a dude, go high if it's a chick. Be smart and go for where it hurts the most. If he/she's down, don't be stupid and run away, go get something to EFFECTIVELY kill him/her and finish it off.

Step 5. Don't stop once the killer stopped moving. Best to take the one most overlooked precaution: aim for the head. If you could cut if off, the better.

Note: Be sure it IS the killer. Who knows, it might be Uncle Henry in a killer Santa get-up... Unless Uncle Henry IS the KILLER! DUN DUN DUUUN!

Typical Christmas psycho number 1. The lame kind
Step 6. Call the cops about a break-in. Never give them the full info. Best to let them know once they get there. Do this in case the killer might get up if you somehow forgot to do Step 5.

Step 7. Be cautious. There might be more killers lurking around. Best to reload your shotgun in case of this.

Step 8. Ask for money once the media and the state found out about your "heroic" grapple against a psycho. Spoil yourself a little. You killed a dangerous criminal and a probable loon, you just saved hundreds from a night of terror from this man/woman and/or more likely avenged a fallen loved one. Not to mention all that psychological torture! You'll be needing therapy for that! And let's not forget the broken windows and furniture. If you're not too shaken, this is one good way to get more cash~ $$$$CHA-CHING!$$$

In case of a partying group:

Step 1: Your friends found out about a loose killer. Best not to panic much and check the cars. At the same time, see to it that this is around ten or twenty states away from your group. If your car's fine and the killer's miles away from your drunken orgy, then party harder. If one of these two isn't right, or both of them aren't, then let's go to-

One good reason why you mustn't go alone.
Step 2: Turns out the car's engine got cut or the killer is a town away from your place. Best to call in the cops.

Now chances are these cops will get their noggins chopped off the moment they arrive so I suggest you also prepare. Again, find weapons to defend yourselves with, keep it with you all the time and please, try not to get too carried away. (like playing with your guns and make "pew-pew" sounds...please, it's a life and death situation...use that brain of yours). And try to remember to put all of your weapons in a safe, well guarded place.

Step3. Never board up ALL your doors. I explained this to you already, so don't make me say this all over again. In case you're staying in a new house, scan the area for potential emergency exits as well as tools to be used as alternative weapons.

Step 4: Know your guests. See any unfamiliar faces? Be suspicious of them, but not too suspicious. The last thing you'll need in a time of crisis is folks getting on each other's throats. If possible, know the killer's face from sources. (Internet, radio description, flyers, that old man who kept shouting "EVIL! EVIL IS IN THAT HOUSE!")

Always watch out for misplaced guests...
especially if he looked like this
Step 5. Have fun in the meantime. Look, it's Christmas; with or without killer, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. Have a few drinks, play some games, chat, mingle, eat, etc. Just don't get too rowdy, or else you all will just pass out. Yer be like sitting ducks for this big guy.

Step 6. Always go in groups. Whether it's sex or toilet, go in groups. If sex, please keep in mind that the killer's more likely to go in that room you're about to have tryst with a girl or guy or a barn animal or someone of the same gender, so check the place up (every inch!) and then lock the door. If by any chance the killer ended up in the house and yer friends are now getting killed: cum, clean up, wear clothes and run through the window like a hen in heat.

If it's toilet, shit faster! Piss faster! It'll hurt but it's better that than an axe between yer legs. Do same escape from the sex option.

Step 7. If killer ends up in the house and you are all in there, be wise guys. You have assorted weapons to take this guy down, why scream and panic in fear if you all could work together and kill this feller? Don't want blood on yer hands? Then by not just knock the guy out, cut off his fingers and tie him up. Yer not killing him and he won't be killing you now.

If possible, try not to get carried away with you naughty deed.
Distractions may come with a big price.
P.S. make sure you cauterize them stumps. He'll bleed to death.

Step 8. If killer, for some reason, is now hacking your friends effectively, relax and do the following: take a deep breath, walk outside (if killer's in the house), be cautious, and silently run to a rival neighbor. Use their phone and call the cops. In case killer/s follow, use yer neighbors as ruses and run like hell.

Step 9. If you are cornered and happens to have a buddy or two with you, try not to be a hero and ask the rest to go on without you. You got to be very stupid to think you can take on a hulk by yourself. If possible, try tackling down the killer as a group and beat the tar out of him. If you can't, better run off as a group and try not to look back.

Step 10. If you guys managed to kill the killer, make sure he is dead. We've been through this before, you know why.

Step 11. If police arrives, try not to scream at them. If that freaked them out, they'll end up shooting you. If you must do anything, just wave your arms and flag them, then lead them to the killer (dead or alive...alive would be a better option but if you must kill him/her, then go.)

Step 12. Ssk for reward money. If refuses, go file a lawsuit.

Step 13. spoil yourself whenever you guys do get the money.

If against a supernatural killer:

Unusual non-everyday killer number 1: Killer Santa. the real deal.

Step 1. Okay, if a demon can do stuff during Christmas, then you're in deep shit. Normally, you would know this from either one of the two situations above. Signs of a supernatural killer would include: teleporting, having the ability to fly, materializes weapons out of nowhere, can naturally breathe fire or cough out hot coal, apparent immortality, able to ride undead horses on roofs, and having the stench of the undead.

In case of living or sentient objects, just think of that object's sole weakness. If it's a living tree, use fire. If it's a killer snowman, use anti-freeze. Killer doll? Depends what kind.

Unusual non-everyday killer number 2:
Killer Snowmen
Step 2. If you are out against a supernatural, best to try and use the usual methods (crosses, garlic, stake, holy water, basic yoga, etc.) If all things fail, try using a spell book. Spell books can be found in the occult section in your local libraries. (There's always at least one or two.)

Unusual non-everyday killer number 3:
Living Christmas decors.
Step 3. If this fails, well, kiss your life good bye and time to meet your maker...or whatever you believe in, you godless heathen...

Step 4. If you are successful, well you're still in a heap of trouble cuz you got a lot of explaining to do with your house being messed up and your friends and family being dead. Cops aren't gonna take the ghosts of Christmas pasts killed mah family story, so try thinking a believable one...

Conclusion:

So, there you have it! Easy to follow steps to keep you alive for the next year or at least until the killer's son decides to follow his dad's footsteps and go hunt you down. Just remember the important ones and I'm sure you'll survive. If you didn't, well...my condolences to you, my brother. But til' then,

Happy Holidays~!
